Growing up, Mrs. Ttyymmnn had a next-door neighbor who joined the navy and went into subs when he was 18. He did his whole stint, 25 years, and retired at 43. He’s now a security advisor (or something like that) in the ME. Really nice guy, too.

My parents had a Navy lieutenant living next door in a condo with the psycho who was a submariner.

“A metal pin showing the bow view of a submarine proceeding on the surface with bow planes rigged for dive flanked by dolphins with their heads rested on the upper edge of the bow planes”

Still have that memorized more than a decade out of OCS haha.

Both my dad and one of my uncles were submariners. I had orders to a sub at one point but never ended up going and instead spent my entire enlistment on land. My dad never lets me forget that.

Well played, Sir. I most definitely should have included that in my post.

I bet he’s still proud that you served. And proud of his own service.

I’m sure, but I don’t have all those cool sea stories like my he and my uncle do. My uncle’s sub (USS Halibut) used to spend a lot of time in Soviet waters doing spy shit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation…

You have more in common with your dad than I do with mine.

The Air Force has 308,606 active duty personnel, of which 12,802 are pilots. That means that only 4% actually fly (a tad more if you include the 3,364 navigators). Without the other 96%, those planes don’t fly. I’m sure there is a larger percentage of Navy personnel who serve on ships, but the point is the same: without those shore-based Sailors, those ships don’t sail.

Well, there’s also aircrew for all the aircraft, so it’s going to be higher than that.

But. I work with a lady who as in the Navy, and is very proud of the fact that she A) Not once went on a boat or B)ever learned to swim.

Good point about the crews. But I bet that only gets the numbers upwards of 10-15%. I have always thought that I would have enjoyed serving in the USCG. But I’ve never been a good enough swimmer. And the thought of drowning scares the s**t out of me.
